Notes to Dave Hickey



I was looking through a few old sketchbooks the other day and came across these notes I'd taken at lectures given by Dave Hickey. I've actually photocopied these notes for people before, so they've been of some value to me, and others. In transcribing them I've attempted to follow my rather idiosyncratic mode of note taking--arrows, wacky lines and all.

not what causes art, but the consequences

Edward Ruscha “Well, I may be misinterpreting it myself.”

Art & writing—creates the occasion for argument about what [the artwork] might have meant

each era gets the art world it deserves

brings us together so we can sort ourselves out

CDSC Update

Since I originally posted about the Craft and Design Service Center workshop J and I participated in, various bits of it have begun to appear on the web, including this picture of me looking like a total spaz. I'm actually sanding that nearly invisible black object in my lap.

On 17 November the CDSC had an opening for the Lanna Design Style Prototype Exhibit. It will be open from the 17th to the 26th at JJ Market.
My sketchbook containing notes from Vithi's lectures and sketches related to the workshop has been uploaded to the Internet Archive.

Workbook Sketchshop

Two more sketchbooks are up on the Internet Archive: 2006 numbers 1 and 2. To download them directly click here and here, but be prepared for a long wait, especially if you live in Thailand, and your cable service is slower, and less delicious, than refrigerated honey.

Jami and I were invited, quite unexpectedly, to participate in an international design workshop hosted by the Chiang Mai University Faculty of Fine Art these next two weeks. We just spent the past two days traveling with the group looking at temples, local handicrafts, and domestic architecture. The rest of this week we'll be trying to juggle that, Jami’s upcoming indigo workshop, and our first border run to Burma.

By the way, I just opened a Flickr account to get a few more photos out. Some of today's shots are already up there.





This is the second nofolete we've found. Gold leaf on a black lacquer ground at Wat Phrathat Lampangluang. We have learned that in Thailand the flying elephant carries the souls of the dead to heaven, since it is strong, and presumably knows the way. Huge winged elephant figures are used in funeral pyres during cremation ceremonies, where they are burnt along with the corpse.

Sketchbook

I have the first of hopefully many public versions of my sketchbooks available as a pdf on the Internet Archive. Hip hip hooray! for an organization that sprinkles "petaboxes" around the world. The book is available under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 2.5 license. So feel free to download it, tear it apart, draw on it, burn it, poke it full of holes, send it to your friends and family, and if you feel like making money off of it--well, just talk to me and we can work something out.

By the way, if anyone needs a decent/free FTP client for their Mac, Cyberduck is great. It was the only way I could get that sketchbook uploaded.
